Article Summary (Draft #1)

In the article, ‘Bamboo with buildings’ by Ghavami and Jaime (2017) stated that bamboo is a very essential and unique material in the housing and infrastructure industry. It is used to replace the vast use of steel and cement, as it is inexpensive and energy-saving; also mitigates widespread damage and destruction caused by natural disasters like global warming. It also facilitates in the housing of the world’s increasing population. Bamboo forests, which are easily accessible, play an important role in managing water cycles, minimize soil erosion and eliminate carbon from the atmosphere. This benefits farmers who can grow bamboo plantations and use bamboo shoots as part of their daily life.
However, bamboo is very prone to attacks by insects and bacteria. Khatib and Nuonu, (as cited in Ghavami and Garcia, 2017) experimented that using linseed oil improves on the bond between bamboo and concrete. This improves the chemical properties of bamboo and increased the widespread use of bamboo towards technical, normative and cultural challenges.
